A presentation on “shared services” to the United Republican Coalition (URC), on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at Church of the Nazarene on Beaver Ave. in Clinton Township started the uprising. The URC is a non-profit Republican club focusing on issues, primarily in Clinton Township.

According to URC President Harmen Vos of Clinton Township, “at the meeting we compared Clinton Town to Clinton Township and it became apparent that both towns have a complete duplication of services.”

He said the 20 members of the URC who were present at the meeting felt it was necessary to create a non-partisan, not bi-partisan, committee to lower the tax burden for residents of both towns.

Vos said, “(We want to) create a platform from where we all together can look into options and discuss the ending of duplication of services. These two towns could be used as a test case for other municipalities in Hunterdon County.”

Vos, who volunteered to chair the committee, said, “We are already starting to see many residents from both towns joining our movement. We just created a Web site with Facebook.com under the name “Clinton Town and Township -- Tax Revolt Committee.”

Vos is encouraging residents to visit the site and join the revolt. “We need as many members as possible to make this work. We need your attendance here, because we value your input in order to look into options to end the duplication of services between municipalities.

“We are starting with Clinton Town and Township, but will not stop there,” he said.

He noted sharing services between towns and schools, regionalization and merging are “all options to substantially lower our tax burden.”
